Description

No. 1 Spencer’s Belle Vue is a house, dating from approximately 1770–1775, and later altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was possibly developed by Mark Spencer. The front of the building is faced with limestone ashlar, while the basement, left side, and rear are constructed of rubble. The rear features a mansard roof extending to a full third floor, covered with artificial slate on the front and Welsh slate on the rear, alongside a coped party wall to the left with two chimney stacks incorporating some early clay pots. The rear elevation is faced with ashlar, rebuilt in reconstituted stone at the front.

The building is three storeys high and has an attic and basement, with a two-window front. The first floor has horned sash windows, two panes over two to the left and plate glass to the right, set in splayed reveals with stone sills. Similar plate glass sashes are present on the second floor. The ground floor has a two-pane-over-two sash window to the left and a 19th-century five-panel door with shaped fielded panels and a glazed upper panel, leading to a 19th-century porch with a two-pane window with a round-headed reveal and stone sill. The basement has a 20th-century aluminium sash window and a door within a glazed screen. A level approach to the entrance is provided via a gate from the pavement. A double dormer window on the attic level has two plate glass horned sashes in a moulded architrave and moulded cornice, likely dating to the 19th century. Other external details include a band course above the ground floor, a bracketed eaves cornice, a coped parapet. A lead hopperhead and downpipe are attached to the right side and are shared with No. 2 Spencer’s Belle Vue. The rear elevation displays plate glass sashes on the second and third floors. The interior remains uninspected. Original wrought iron railings and a gate, featuring shaped heads and arrowheads on limestone bases and a Pennant edge, are attached to the property.
