Description

The building comprises a raised pavement fronting numbers 1 to 10 Portland Place, constructed in 1786 by John Eveleigh. The pavement is constructed from limestone rubble and pennant stone, with the height increasing towards the eastern end. For approximately 10 metres, the pavement is enclosed by railings featuring cast iron balls below the bottom rail. To the left, a long run of six steps leads up to the pavement. Ramps approach a central platform and are similarly flanked by railings alongside slightly truncated obelisks on plinths, which formerly supported lamps. This refined, slightly Neoclassical pavement is comparable to those found in Bath, and contributes to the monumentality of Portland Place.
