Description
No. 16 Portland Place is a house, dating from circa 1786, and now used as flats. It is constructed of limestone ashlar to the front, with a rubble plinth at basement level and rubble to the rear. The roof is a parapeted mansard style, covered with Welsh slate to the front and rear; the rear slope features double Roman tiles, and there's a coped party wall with two truncated rendered stacks to the right. The building sits at the corner of Burlington Street, with its main facade facing Portland Place. It has a narrow two-window front at the angle to its right on Burlington Street, with a staircase on the left front.
The Portland Place front is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, arranged as a two-window range. The first floor has a four/four-sash window in a plain reveal to the left, and a plate glass sash in a plain reveal to the right. The second floor has a six/one-sash window to the left, and a six/six-sash window to the right, both in plain reveals. The ground floor has a plate glass sash with a stone sill to the left, and a six-panel door with flush, fielded panels and glazing, set in a chamfered plain reveal splayed to the right. There are two steps leading to a concrete-coated crossover with a cast iron footscraper, and a small extension in the basement area to the left. A single dormer features a plate glass horned sash. The Burlington Street front has two grouped six/six-sashes to the first floor, two similar six/one-sashes to the second floor, and two similar plate glass sashes with wrought iron guards and a continuous stone sill to the ground floor; two similar sashes are located on the basement level. The basement has a four-panel door set within concrete blockwork under the crossover, and the area steps are gone. A single dormer features a six/six-sash. Weathered sill bands are present on the first and second floors, along with a modillion eaves cornice and a coped parapet continuous to both fronts. A lead hopperhead and downpipe are located to the far right. The rear elevation features three plate glass sashes to each of the ground and first floors, six/six-sashes to the second floor, and double and single dormers with plate glass sashes, also including a 20th-century window. A lead hopperhead is positioned at eaves to the right.
The interior of the property was not inspected during the listing process.
Attached to the front are wrought iron railings and two gates, which incorporate urn heads and urn finials on limestone bases. The building's history is related to that of 1-10 Portland Place.
