Description
Strumble Cottage is a house built in the early to mid-19th century, located against a retaining wall of The Retreat to the right. It is constructed from limestone ashlar, with an unseen roof and moulded stacks on the left return. The building has a double depth plan and stands two storeys high with a basement, featuring a two-window range. The coped parapet rises to meet the stacks on the left return, and there is a stopped cornice, a ground floor platband, and raised eared surrounds with bracketed sills to the six-over-six pane sash windows. To the right, there is a five-panel door that is glazed at the top. The left return has two additional windows. The interior, which has not been inspected, is noted to be early 19th century.
Additionally, there is a rubblestone retaining wall that is approximately 4 meters high, made of coped ashlar at the top, extending forward from the right-hand corner for about 20 meters to meet the front wall. This wall features chamfered rusticated gatepiers with moulded cornices, block tops, and small 20th-century ball finials.
