Description
The gatehouse to Cuckfield Park, which includes iron railings, is a former gatehouse dating from the late 16th century, with railings added in the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond with stone dressings. The structure features a central two-storey entrance archway with a room above, flanked by four three-storey octagonal turrets. The entrance is four-centred and now has a 19th-century cast iron gate with a dog rail. Above the entrance is a three-light stone mullioned window with ogee sections and hood-moulding, and there is an eaves cornice. The turrets have remnants of stone finials, and while most windows are loop windows, there are some circular windows as well. The southwest turret is topped with an ogee-shaped leaden cupola that has a wooden finial and a clock face facing the house. There is a wooden winder staircase window in the southeast turret. The gatehouse is connected to two sections of garden wall by an early 19th-century low brick wall with iron spear railings featuring urn principals and two sets of carriage gates.
