Description
The Mill House is a house that was formerly a miller's residence. The rear part of the building dates from the mid to late 15th century and features a four-bay timber-framed structure. The front part is from the 18th century and was altered around 1920.
The rear range has a ground floor that is built in brick, while the first floor showcases exposed square framing with jowled posts and wattle and daub infilling. It has a tiled roof and includes 20th-century casement windows, along with a brick and tiled extension added to the back.
The front range is taller, consisting of two storeys and attics. The ground floor is made of brick, and the first floor is tile-hung. It has a Mansard roof that is tiled at the back, with Horsham stone slabs on the garden elevation. The building features tall axial chimney stacks and two modern hipped dormers, as well as a dogtooth cornice. There are three modern casement windows, including a modern bay window on the ground floor. The doorcase is now located in the modern left-hand bay.
Although the interior was not seen during the survey, it is reported to include a blocked mullioned window between the front and rear ranges. The house was the home of Timothy Burrell, a noted diarist from Cuckfield.
