Description

Sunte House is a large L-shaped house built in 1700, featuring two main elevations. It has an 18th-century service wing to the northeast and a 19th-century extension to the northwest, designed in a similar style. The building is two storeys high with attics and has five windows on each principal elevation. The exterior is constructed of diaper pattern red brick with grey headers, set on a cemented plinth. It has a steeply pitched slate roof with two pedimented dormers and a deep wooden modillion eaves cornice. The stone quoins and a moulded stone band separate the floors. The windows are 16-pane sashes with rubbed brick arches and scalloped blind boxes. The central doorcase on the south elevation features a flat wooden hood supported by enriched scrolled wooden brackets, with a double door and rectangular fanlight flanked by sidelights.

Attached to the south is a forecourt wall made of two courses of sandstone blocks, with brick piers topped with moulded caps and ball finials. The east or garden elevation includes windows with stone keystones, and the doorcase has a flight of steps with a ramped iron handrail. The west elevation is mostly 19th-century but matches the overall style. The northeast extension is an 18th-century laundry extension, a single storey made of red brick with a Horsham stone slab roof and metal casements.

Inside, the house features an early 18th-century principal staircase made of elm, with three turned balusters on each step and scrolled tread ends. There is also a service well staircase of painted wood with turned balusters and square newel posts. The interior includes two fireplaces adorned with Delft tiles, and a fine late 18th-century or early 19th-century fireplace on the first floor, which has an elaborate cast iron ducks nest grate. The roof structure includes staggered purlins.
