Description

The signal box at Horsham Railway Station is a railway signal box built around 1938, designed in the International Modern Style as a type 13 signal box for the Southern Region. It is constructed of brown brick and features a flat roof, a concrete cornice, and a canopy on the upper floor. This signal box is one of the larger two-storey designs, with the ground floor accommodating equipment and staff, while the upper floor serves as the operating area.

The upper floor has five timber operating windows on each side, which are made of plate glass and have rounded corners. The ground floor is longer and rectangular, featuring a moulded concrete cornice and the word "HORSHAM" displayed prominently in large lettering. The three central windows on the ground floor are tripartite horizontally glazed metal casements, while the three windows on the right side are double metal-framed casements. The left side has three similar casement windows, but the two closest to the center have been blocked. There are also two doors, and the end of the building has a large opening with a flat arch.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is reputed that the internal equipment is of interest. Signal boxes of this type typically had mechanical or power frames.

Historically, the first Modern Movement signal boxes for the Southern Region were constructed at Millbrook and Southampton Central in 1935, although those were rectangular. The first type 13 design was built at Surbiton in 1936, and by 1940, more than a dozen signal boxes of this design had been constructed. This example is illustrated as representative of the type in "The Signal Box," published in 1985.
