Description
The barn at Wappingthorn Farm is a Grade II listed building designed by Maxwell Ayrton FRIBA for Sir Arthur Howard between 1929 and 1930 as part of a model dairy farm. The barn features six concrete columns on both the north and south sides, with wooden lintels creating five open-sided bays. The rest of the structure, including the tops of the north and south sides, the east and west ends, and the roof, is metal-framed and clad in corrugated asbestos. The concrete columns are made from a well-compacted mix of concrete, showing the lines from the two feet by six inch lift used in their construction. This barn is notable for its innovative use of concrete in architectural design, rather than just for structural purposes, marking it as a significant example of Inter-War agricultural architecture.
