Description
Wappingthorn is a large L-shaped house that was once an important residence before becoming a farmhouse. It has been significantly altered and enlarged in modern times. The house features 12 windows, with only the west end of the east-west wing dating back to 1609. Constructed of red brick, it has a stone stringcourse and a Horsham slab roof. The building is two storeys high and has four windows on the ground floor.
The easternmost window bay and the second bay from the east project slightly from the main structure. The easternmost bay features a large window that extends the full height of the two storeys, consisting of four tiers of six lights, with only four lights glazed in the bottom, next to bottom, and top tiers. The second bay has long and short stone quoins, sprocket eaves, a hipped roof, a central cartouche, and a four-light window on each floor, with the upper window having two tiers but only two lights in the lower tier glazed.
Between these two projecting bays is another large window that also rises the full height of the two storeys, containing five tiers of six lights, with only three lights in the second tier from the top and two in the fourth and bottom tiers glazed. The westernmost window bay has a window on each floor with two tiers of three lights, although the upper lights of the first-floor window are blocked. There is a buttress at the angle of this window bay.
At the other end of the old part of the house, there is a modern porch that includes an original stone doorway featuring pilasters, carved spandrels, a keystone, an enriched frieze, and a projecting cornice.
