Description

St John's College, formerly known as Coolhurst, features a mix of architectural styles and dates. The oldest part of the building is the back section of the former service wing, which dates from the 17th century and is constructed of stone and red brick. The main structure is a Tudor Gothic mansion built between 1833 and 1835 by Maria, Marchioness of Northampton, and designed by architect P F Robinson.

This two-storey building has five windows and is faced with Roman cement, topped by a Horsham slab roof. It features two bays of six-light windows on both floors, each with gables above that are surmounted by finials. A parapet between the gables contains Gothic lettering. The windows are casement style, with either two or three lights and dripstones above. On the ground floor, there is a square bay window with five lights and a pierced parapet.

At the west end, there is a ground floor addition that serves as a library, featuring a slate roof. The service wing, which is set back at the east end, has a gable designed in a cottage Gothic style with cusped bargeboards. The entrance front showcases a three-storey tower above the doorway, which has an empty niche on the first floor, along with a gable that features a small oriel window to the east. Overall, St John's College is a notable example of a Tudor Gothic mansion.
