Description

Eastgate Hall is a Non-Conformist chapel that was later converted into a hall. It is dated 1728, as indicated by a tablet above the main entrance, and it is a rebuilding of a chapel originally constructed in 1671. The building has 20th-century additions to the lower part of the front that are not of special interest. It features a stucco exterior with a tiled rear gable and a gabled tiled roof, and it is rectangular in shape.

The entrance front has stone coping with kneelers, a central urn, and side ball finials. There is a cambered 20-pane sash window with a vermiculated surround. Beneath the 20th-century lean-to extension, there is a central datestone that reads "Rebuilt ANNO DOM 1728." The original central round-headed doorcase includes a keystone, impost blocks, and the original double-leaved door, each with three fielded panels and L-hinges. The front elevation also features two additional 20th-century openings at the sides.

On the side elevations, there are two round-headed fixed pane casement windows with Gothick heads, some of which retain colored glass. The rear elevation includes a 20th-century tile-hung gable and two round-headed openings with 20th-century casements.

Inside, the hall has a barrel-vaulted roof supported on each side by three octagonal wooden columns with chamfered bases on stone plinths. There is a raised dais at the rear with a panel in the center.

Historically, this is Chichester's oldest Non-Conformist chapel. The original Baptist Church on this site was established in 1671 and rebuilt in 1728. By the early 20th century, it had become a Unitarian Chapel and later a hall. One of the founders of the Baptist Chapel was George Smith, who was the grandfather of the three Smith brothers known as the Chichester painters. Their father, William, served as the Minister of the Eastgate Chapel.
