Description

The Chichester War Memorial, made of Portland stone and slate, is located in the southern section of Litten Gardens at the end of a path. It stands on a circular mound and is surrounded by a curvilinear limestone dwarf wall with four stepped access paths.

The memorial has an octagonal base consisting of two steps separated by a concave moulding. Above this, vertical plaques create a 16-sided base with a dentil cornice that supports the central shaft. Four buttress piers extend from the base, each topped with pyramidal, crocketted finials.

The central shaft is also octagonal and features an elaborately carved wheel-head cross, which is supported by four right-angled carved brackets. The terminals of the cross are decorated with carved foliage, and the center showcases a rose motif.

A central plaque facing south, located between the Roll of Honour plaques, bears the inscription: "IN GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF/ CHICHESTER/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-19/ 1939-1945." This plaque also includes a carved relief of the Chichester coat of arms.

There are 16 First World War Roll of Honour plaques listing the names of 353 individuals who died, organized by military organization and representing 60 different units. Additionally, at the base of the monument, four Second World War plaques are set horizontally on the ground, facing north, east, south, and west, inscribed with the names of 255 men who fell in that conflict.
