Description

The Chislehurst War Memorial is located prominently on the northwest side of the junction of Centre Common Road and Bromley Road. Standing at 7.3 meters tall, the memorial features a cross made of Portland stone, modeled after the Imperial (later Commonwealth) War Graves Commission Cross of Sacrifice. The cross is positioned atop a three-stage octagonal plinth, which itself rests on an octagonal base.

Inscriptions are present on all three stages of the plinth. The top stage has an inscription that wraps around its drum, reading, from the front face, "IN PROUD/ AND GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/ CHISLEHURST/ FALLEN IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919." Below this, the names of the fallen are incised on the plinth, starting alphabetically on the front face. Originally, 186 names were recorded, and this number has now increased to 189.

On the front face of the middle stage, there is an inscription commemorating the Second World War, reading "1939/ 1945." Additionally, a small bronze tablet on this stage states, "ALSO REMEMBERED/ WITH GRATEFUL APPRECIATION/ THOSE WHO, SINCE THE SECOND WORLD WAR,/ HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN CONFLICTS/ AND PEACE-KEEPING MISSIONS/ THROUGHOUT THE WORLD."

The names of 65 individuals who fell in the Second World War are inscribed on the bottom stage of the plinth, along with the inscription "THEY GAVE US PEACE/ BY THEIR WARFARE/ AND LIFE BY THEIR DEATH," which was part of the original design for the First World War. The memorial is surrounded by a lawn with a flower border and an octagonal stone kerb.
