Description
37 and 39 Westgate are a pair of 18th-century houses located on the south side of Westgate. They feature a tiled gabled roof and are two storeys tall with an attic, although their frontage is much lower than that of the adjacent houses at Nos 31-35. There are four chimney stacks situated behind the roof. The houses have six flat-roofed dormers, and the sash windows retain their glazing bars. A small red brick cornice with modillions runs along the eaves. The front facade is made of red brick and includes six windows with segmental arches and rubbed brick voussoirs. The sash windows have flush boxes and intact glazing bars. The first-floor windows, except for the central ones of each house, feature iron balconies. The ground floor doorways are similar to the one at No 35, with doors that have six flush panels, the top two of which are cut away and glazed. The doors are set in panelled reveals and are topped with a doorcase that includes Doric pilasters, an entablature, and a moulded rectangular pediment. Nos 27 to 39 form a group.
