Description
31 High Street is a late 17th-century building with a stuccoed exterior and a pitched tile roof. It features a west extension that is slate-hung with a half-hipped roof. The structure has two storeys and attics, characterized by a deep wooden eaves cornice with moulded consoles, and end consoles that are diagonally placed to resemble dragon posts. The ground floor has a modern shop front, while the first floor contains three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars and one attic dormer.
To the west, there is a one-storey outhouse attached to No 33, which dates from the early 19th century. This outhouse is constructed of beach flint with red brick dressings and grey brick voussoirs, featuring a hipped tile roof and a planked door on both the north side (to No 33) and the south side (to No 31), the latter accessed by red brick steps. There is also a separate one-storey outhouse to the west of No 31, built in the early 19th century from painted brick with a pitched tile roof and a brick modillion eaves cornice, although it has modern openings.
Additionally, there is a two-storey outhouse behind No 31, dating from the 18th century, made of red brick with dressings of Bognor Rock and a hipped tile roof. The south elevation of this outhouse has three ranges of windows, all casements with cast iron frames and lead glazing bars, along with one planked loft door on the first floor. The east end features a planked door on the ground floor and another planked loft door on the first floor.
Nos 27 to 33 (odd) and Nos 37 to 43 (odd) form a group.
