Description

This is a row of terraced cottages located on King Street, dating from the early 19th century. Local accounts suggest they were built by French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars. The cottages are constructed of beach flint with brick dressings and chimneys. Numbers 13 and 25 have been whitewashed. They have pitched slate roofs. The buildings are two storeys high, with each having a single window range, except for number 25, which is double-fronted and houses The Old Ship Public House. The windows are segment-headed, double-hung sashes with glazing bars, although numbers 17 and 27 have modern casement windows. The doorways are also segment-headed, with numbers 31-9 having gables supported by wooden brackets. Fanlights are present above doorways at numbers 13-23 (odd), and also at numbers 27 and 29. A brick modillion cornice runs along the top of the buildings. Numbers 13 to 43 (odd) are considered to form a cohesive group.
