Description
Priory Farmhouse is a 13th-century building located on Arundel Road in Crossbush. Originally founded as a house for Augustinian Canons by Queen Adelisa, the widow of Henry I, it was dedicated to St Bartholomew and known as the Priory de Calceto or of the Causeway before its suppression by Cardinal Wolsey in 1524. The farmhouse retains a portion of a square tower from the original priory. It is constructed of stone rubble and flints with red brick dressings and features two stone buttresses on the southwest side. The roof is pyramidal and tiled, and the building has three windows on the south and three on the west. There are modern additions on the southeast with two windows and one on the northwest with a penthouse roof. The name of the farmhouse is spelled Calcetto with two "ts".
