Description

Shoreham College, formerly known as Shoreham Grammar School, is a house that has been converted into a school. It was built in the early to mid-18th century and has had additions and internal alterations made around 1880. The building features coursed flint, which is knapped on the south side, along with red brick and some stone quoins and dressings, all of which have been limewashed at some point, though this finish is now largely fading. The roof is plain tiled and hipped, with a bracketed eaves cornice. The original south wing has end stacks, and there are two gabled dormers on the south side and one on the east side.

The south front showcases the main facade of the original early to mid-18th century block, which has been extended in depth to create the east front. This facade has five bays, with the third and fourth bays on the ground floor replaced by a late 19th-century square bay. The remaining windows are glazing bar sashes set in wide raised surrounds with segment heads and keystones. The east front is blank at the left end, revealing the side wall of the original south block. There is a projecting wing at the right end with a hipped gable in a similar style, and a 20th-century projection to the right featuring a parapet. The east front has an irregular arrangement of six windows on each floor, comprising a mix of casements and sashes.

A later 19th-century entrance is located to the left of center, constructed in a chequer pattern of knapped flint and ashlar dressings, topped with a parapet. It features a moulded Tudor arched surround with double planked doors. Inside, there are surviving elements from around 1880, including panelling, fireplaces, doors and doorcases, as well as a neo-Jacobean staircase.
