Description
The war memorial, built in 1922, was designed by local Harbour Master Councillor A Catt. It is primarily constructed from concrete aggregate blocks that resemble rusticated stone, with some slabs of broken concrete sourced from a military camp that housed Royal Marine Engineers on Southwick Green, as well as granite and bronze decorations. The memorial features a tapering concrete obelisk approximately 15 feet tall, topped with a moulded granite pyramidal cap, cornice, and plinth.
On the south front, there is a bronze wreath affixed to the obelisk and a bronze plaque on the plinth that reads, "This memorial was erected to the memory of the men of Southwick and Fishersgate who fell in the Great War 1914-1919. Let those for whom they died see they be not forgotten." Below this, another panel notes "1939-1945." The other sides of the obelisk display stone inscription panels listing the names of the fallen.
The obelisk is set on two octagonal broken concrete steps, resting on an oval broken concrete base that features concrete aggregate balustrading with eight piers. There are two flights of four stone steps leading up to the memorial, along with end elliptical-shaped flower beds enclosed by cast iron railings.
