Description

This is a house, dating from the early 18th century, located in Southwick. It was originally recorded as Nos. 47 (The Nether Hall) and 49 (The Hall), and later as Nos. 49 (The Hall) and 51 (The Upper Hall). The construction combines knapped flint with a red brick plinth band, a raised plat band, quoins, and dressings. A raised band and wooden modillion eaves cornice sit above a plain tiled roof, accented by brick ridge stacks. A slightly lower projecting wing is located to the left, featuring a moulded wooden cornice and a side stack.

The two-storey facade is approximately eight windows wide, exhibiting slight irregularities in window widths and the spacing between them. The windows are mostly glazing bar sashes with glazing bars only in the upper blade, each framed by a gauged brick flat arch. The main entrance is positioned below the fifth window from the right and features a later 18th-century panelled door topped by a wreathed and radiating fanlight, sheltered by a Doric columnar projecting entablature-hood porch. A re-entrant angle bay to the south wing contains a glazed door topped by a transom-light and flat hood on iron supports, corresponding to No. 47.
