Description

The Church of St. Nicholas is a Grade I listed building located in Pyrford, Woking. It dates back to the 12th century and was restored in 1869 by Sir T.G. Jackson. The church is constructed from mortar-covered puddingstone, ironstone, and clunch dressings, topped with a plain tiled roof and a wood-shingled bell turret, which was restored in 1967 at the west end. The layout includes a nave, north and south porches, and a chancel to the east, with a central medieval buttress at the west end. The north porch is timber-framed with brick infill, and the north door features Norman zigzag carving on the arch, with simple capitals—one scalloped and one with plain leaves—on the jamb shafts. There are round Norman windows on the north side of the chancel and on either side of the buttress on the west wall, while the east window is from the 14th century, with the remainder being Victorian restorations.

Inside, the church has an arched braced roof supported by three trusses in the nave and two in the chancel, with a round step chancel arch. Notable fittings include a fine Jacobean pulpit with geometrically panelled design and a tester, dated 1628 on the front. There are remnants of wall paintings from around 1140 on the south wall, depicting the Flagellation of Christ and a Psychomachia, and on the north wall of the nave, there is a depiction of Pilgrim's Way from around 1200, which was restored in 1970.
