Description
Nos 8 to 11 on West Street are 19th-century buildings, with Nos 10 and 11 dating from the 18th to 19th centuries. No 8 is three storeys high with four windows, where the westernmost three bays project slightly forward. It features a slate gabled roof, a bracketed eaves cornice, and a painted band between the first and second floors. The brick front has intact glazing bars and a plate glass shop front on the ground floor.
No 9 is also three storeys but has a one-bay front and a peaked roof. It has a moulded wood eaves cornice and a red brick front, with a three-light sash window with intact glazing bars on both upper floors. The ground floor features a modern Georgian style bow fronted shop window.
Nos 10 and 11 are separate buildings, with No 10 being the later addition. No 10 has a three-storey, six-bay front with a fourth, tile-hung storey set back. It has boxed eaves, while No 11 has moulded eaves. Both have red brick fronts, with windows that have intact glazing bars and rubbed brick voussoirs. The ground floor of both buildings has a modern plate glass shop front and casing that extends across the whole width.
An oval plaque on No 10 commemorates Augustus Montague Toplady, who was born there on November 4, 1740, stating that the stone was taken from Burrington Combe. There is also a monument to Toplady in the Parish Church of St Andrew. Notably, he was born on the site of No 10, rather than in the current building.
Nos 8 to 15 form a group, which includes a lamp and lamp bracket to the west of No 15.
