Description

The obelisk, erected in 1794 by Dr. Jacob Ellery, commemorates the opening of the turnpike road through Cranleigh from Guildford to Horsham. It features a sandstone block step plinth with a tooled ashlar pedestal above. The obelisk has an octagonal plan and is cement rendered, rising to approximately 20 feet high. On the north and south sides, there are cast iron plates manufactured by J. Champion of Cranleigh, which provide mileages to adjoining towns and villages.
