Description
Grayswood House is an early 19th-century house with an added Victorian range, located on Lower Road in Grayswood. The main garden front is two storeys high with five windows, built of red brick and featuring a stone-coped parapet. The recessed sash windows, which have glazing bars, are topped with gauged flat brick arches. There is possibly a later projecting one-storey porch that includes a stone cornice and parapet, along with an impost string from a round-arched opening that has a patterned fanlight and a later door. On the right side, there is a one-storey round bow.
At the back, there is a parallel rear range dating from around 1860, which is also two storeys tall and has three wide bays, with an attic window under a central gable. This section is constructed of red brick with blue headers and features a diagonal brick cornice and a steep tiled roof. The windows include sash windows with glazing bars above and margin lights below, as well as one long casement. There is a small right extension made of malmstone rubble. Grayswood House was the residence of Mrs. Humphrey Ward, the novelist.
