Description
Red Court is a large house built between 1894 and 1895 by Ernest Newton. It is significant as an early example of the revival of the classical 18th century style, while still retaining some Queen Anne features. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a seven-bay entrance front where the central bay projects. It is constructed of red brick and features a stone-coped central parapet and small gables resembling pediments in the middle of the side sections.
The windows are sash style with glazing bars, set in moulded wood architraves and topped with segmental gauged brick arches that include keystones. Below the gables, there are quasi-Venetian windows. The projecting entrance section has a studded door that is set back in a stone-lined recess, topped with a segmental cornice hood. To the right of the entrance, there is a rounded bow window with a lead roof and a patterned gutter.
The garden front is asymmetrical but shares similar architectural features. Above the door, there is a large oriel window adorned with a repousse lead ornamental frieze inscribed with "DULCE DOMUM." The rainwater head is dated 1895.
