Description
No. 8 East Street is a building from the early 18th century that has been altered in the early 19th century. It features two parallel ranges running from northeast to southwest, which have been cut through to create a wide passageway on the ground floor. The front facing East Street has a steeply pitched tile roof with a hip at the left end. There is one hipped dormer on the return and two modern two-light gabled dormers on the front. The building has a paired bracketed eaves cornice and a red brick façade. At the eaves level, there are three sash windows, each four panes wide. The ground floor includes a passageway through the two left-hand bays and a plate glass shop front in the right-hand bay.
On the courtyard side, the roof features three gabled dormers. The original 18th-century eaves have a modillion cornice, and there are three sash windows, four panes wide, along with one blocked window. Two of the windows have guards. At the northeast end, there is a two-storey, one-bay addition with a painted brick front, which includes dentil eaves, a string course below with bands of fluting, and circular paterae alternately. There is also one blind segmental beaded panel and a plate-glass shop front on the ground floor.
