Description
The garage and maisonette block at Ladywell Convent was built in 1910 by Sir Guy Dawber for Major-General D A Scott. It features Bargate rubblestone with brick dressings and weatherboard, topped with plain tile roofs. The structure is one storey high with an attic and consists of four bays, originally surrounding a courtyard at the rear. There is a weatherboarded garage wing to the rear left, along with later 20th-century additions at the back and a roof over the courtyard that are not of special interest.
The second bay includes a wide archway leading to the rear courtyard, which has recessed board doors, one of which has an inset pedestrian door. The side walls are canted at the front and have doorways leading to the cottages. The building features three-light double-chamfered mullion windows with leaded lights and wooden rainwater pipes. The eaves oversail, and there are three 2-light leaded dormers with swept hipped roofs. A tall central tile-hung belfry is present, complete with a wood-latticed bell stage and a swept leaded roof, which has lucarnes and a weather vane bearing the initials 'DAS'. The external end stacks are corniced, with the right stack featuring coupled, diagonally-set flues. At the rear, the gable of the weatherboarded wing has a loading door.
