Description

The house at Crowts dates from the mid-16th century, and may incorporate an earlier structure. It was extended to the right in the 18th century and to the rear in the 20th century. The central and left portions are timber-framed, set on a tall rubble stone plinth with sandstone infilling, and tile hung above in a semi-circular pattern. The right end is of coursed galleted sandstone with brick dressings, and features alternate rows of semi-circular and plain tile hanging above. The roof is tiled and half-hipped to the right, and hipped to the left. The building is set at right angles to the street.

Originally, the house comprised three framed bays, with a multiple stack on the left ridge and a ridge stack to the right of the centre. The windows are wood-framed with diamond-leaded lights; there are five windows to the first floor, including a three-light window in the end extension, and two with ovolo mullions. The ground floor has five windows, two to the right of the centre with ovolo mullions. The tile hanging sweeps outward over the ground floor, supported by brackets. A studded door is located to the right of the centre, accessed by a flight of five stone steps and set at right angles. A 20th-century brick and tile-hung wing extends to the rear, also at right angles.
