Description
White Hart Cottage is a hall house that has been extended and divided, dating from the early 15th century with additional extensions from the 16th and 19th centuries at the ends and rear. The building features a timber frame clad in brick below, with the frame exposed on the left side and whitewashed brick infilling. The rear has a Horsham slab roof, while the front pitch is tile hung, half-hipped to the left with a gablet. The cottage is one storey and attic to the left, with two gabled through-eaves dormers, and two storeys to the right in a cross wing. It consists of four framed bays, including a two-bay hall, with a multiple stack positioned to the left of centre. The first floor left has a passing brace, and there is tension bracing to the left of centre. A braced crown-post is exposed on the gable end of the cross wing, with nesting boxes located above in the gable apex. The first floor has irregular fenestration, including four windows, an oriel with diamond mullions, and two windows on the ground floor, one of which is an angle bay oriel to the left. There is one window on each floor of the cross wing, along with a panelled door in a gabled porch to the left of centre and another door to the gabled wing. A pentice extension is present at the left end, and there is an outshot across the rear. To the right is a 19th-century brick and tile hung cottage, which is not of special interest.
Inside, there are substantial quantities of exposed framing, including a massive cambered tie-beam and a braced crown post roof in the hall. A cornice rail runs around the Hall and Solar wing to the south. An intact wattle and daub smoke hood directs smoke to the gablet, and there is evidence of a former jetty on the southern solar wing. The solar wing framing features arched braces and a hollow chamfered open truss. This is an early house of notable quality.
