Description

The wall to the south of the Church of St Nicholas is a churchyard wall and gate built in 1847 by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. It is constructed of red and blue brick, featuring a sandstone return wall that contains a gate designed in the Neo-Norman style. The wall stands approximately 12 feet high and has quoins on the sandstone section, topped with ashlar coping. The round-arched door is set beneath a drip mould and features a three-step order. The outer order has a chevron band on the jamb shafts, which are adorned with scalloped capitals, while the inner order also displays chevrons. This structure is included for its group value.
