Description

Puttenden Manor House is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with extensions made in the 17th century and further additions to the rear in the late 19th or early 20th century. The building features a timber frame set on a coursed stone plinth, with rendered infill in the exposed framing. The roofs are plain tiled and have been restored, with Horsham slabs covering the connecting wing at the rear. The house has an H plan layout and is two storeys high, with four framed bays across the front range. The first floor juts out on a moulded bressumer.

The windows exhibit irregular placement, featuring wood-framed mullioned leaded casements that include a mix of old and new styles. There are five three-light windows on the first floor and six windows on the ground floor, which include three mullioned and transomed windows. A planked door is located to the left of centre within a gabled timber frame porch.

On the right side of the front, there is a pent roofed extension at ground level, along with two gabled ranges. A two-storey gabled porch is positioned to the left of centre, featuring a billeted beam above the ground floor. The Tudor style door is ribbed and studded, set in a moulded surround. Above this door is an oriel window with wooden tracery lights and an angel figure at the bottom of the bracket. The gable is adorned with scalloped carved and pierced bargeboards.

At the rear, there is a late 19th or early 20th century parallel range that is incomplete and features a Wealden type jettied first floor on the left side, with a moulded bressumer over the ground floor. The right-hand bay remains unfinished. The house was undergoing complete restoration at the time of the re-survey.
