Description
Barrow Green Court is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid 18th century and restorations and extensions added in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick and features plain tiled parallel range roofs, with four prominent diagonal stacks located at the left end and across the rear.
The entrance front has two storeys and an attic, which is adorned with four hipped roof casement dormers. There is a brick plat band above the ground floor and a string course at the base of the parapet. The façade consists of four bays, with angle bays that rise through two storeys at the outer ends. The glazing bar sash windows are set under gauged heads. The central entrance features double glazed doors framed by a chanelled Doric pilaster surround and an entablature topped with a dentilled segmental pediment. To the left, there is a single storey extension that includes a stone mullioned and transomed window. The right-hand return front displays three gables with brick coping and valley finials. A central rusticated entrance frontispiece projects forward, showcasing a rich six-panel door framed by an egg and dart surround, with flanking Doric pilasters that support a pediment. There is also a 20th-century wing at the rear right.
Inside, the house features a fine panelled hall with a moulded ceiling and an elaborate Jacobean fireplace. This fireplace is flanked by wooden figures on pedestals that support a coved lintel, with a three-bay overmantel decorated with foliage capitals and scroll-decorated columns. Female figures in arched niches flank a central coat of arms, which is topped with strapwork cresting. Other notable interior features include additional fine 17th-century fireplaces, one adorned with Dutch tiles, a staircase with foliage scroll tread ends and turned balusters, panelled doors leading to the landing, and Regency bookcases in the library.
