Description

The Stone House comprises two early 18th-century cottages, now combined into a single dwelling, with a later 19th-century front wing. One of the cottages, number 2A, has a timber frame dating back to about 1700, and is clad in weatherboarding. It features a later 19th-century outshut constructed of ragstone and brick, and has a tiled roof. An original end chimney was later linked to the parlour wing of number 2. The front of number 2A has one window, with a triple window on the first floor, fitted with pintle hinges. The ground floor features a 19th-century casement window, and a plank door is located on the right-hand side. Internally, features include a cambered fireplace, exposed floor joists, a cupboard, a winder staircase, and exposed framing to the attic with diagonal braces.

Number 2 has an 18th-century rear wing and a 19th-century front wing. The rear wing has a timber frame covered with brickwork and weatherboarding to the first floor of the north-west front, and a tiled roof with a tall brick chimneystack. It has two storeys and irregular window placement, predominantly casement windows. The interior reveals an exposed panelled frame and wide plank doors. The front wing was added after 1870, originally intended as a parlour and best bedroom, and is constructed of ragstone with brick quoins and a tiled roof with a brick chimneystack. It has two storeys and a single window on each floor; the first floor window is a 16-pane sash, while the ground floor window is a 12-pane sash, both with cambered heads. A cambered headed doorcase is located on the side elevation, and a first-floor room contains an elaborate cast-iron firegrate.
