Description
Shelley's Cottage is a small cottage built around 1800. It features red brick construction and a low-pitched slate roof with lead hips and ridge. The building has two storeys and a symmetrical front elevation. The central door is flanked by fluted pilasters and has a slender hood above it. The door itself is a four-panel design, with the upper panels being semicircular-headed and glazed. Above the door, there is a 16-pane sash window, and on either side of the door, there are wider 16-pane sash windows with rubbed brick arches. Similar windows are located above the chimney stack at each end of the cottage. Inside, there is a simple staircase with square balusters. The cottage has undergone several later extensions that match its original style and materials. Notably, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley lived here from 1815 to 1816, during which time his son with Mary Godwin was born.
