Description
Cumberland Obelisk is a memorial commemorating the death of William, Duke of Cumberland, in 1765. It features a tapered square column on a classical base, topped with a sun symbol. The obelisk is inscribed by His Majesty King William IV, stating, "Raised by the command of King George the Second to commemorate the services of his son William, Duke of Cumberland and the success of his arms and the gratitude of his Father." A Garter symbol is carved into the base on the sides facing south and west. The base tablet facing north is carved with a laurel wreath and surmounted by a Royal crest, inscribed with "W.A. Born April 15th 1721 Died October 31st 1765." The column above the north tablet is incised with the word "CUMBERLAND."
