Description
Woburn Park, designed by architect William Kent around 1748, has undergone significant alterations in the late 19th century, during which the two-storey elevations were covered in cement render, changing their original appearance. Inside, there is a late 18th century or early 19th century staircase featuring a delicate metal balustrade. Some first-floor rooms retain original 18th century cornices and panelling, although of a more ordinary type. In the 18th century, Woburn Park, also known as Woburn Farm, was the residence of Phillip Southcote, who transformed the estate into a "ferme ornee" or ornamental farm, which included fields for cattle or crops, enhanced with statuary, vases, temples, archways, and other decorative elements. While very little of the original layout remains, some structures on the estate are still notable enough to warrant listing. Woburn Park and the listed structures within its grounds form a cohesive group.
