Description
This is a 1931-32 office block, originally built for the East Surrey Traction Company before its absorption into London Transport. It is constructed of red-brown brick in English bond, with a plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high with a two-level attic. It has nine bays, with the left bay canted at an angle. The first floor uses a different brick bond pattern. The windows are wide, three-light designs with multi-pane sashes and casements, and stone cills. The right bay has a single-light window. The attic has dormers with flat, leaded roofs.
The entrance, in the second bay from the right, features a projecting porch with a flat roof and a stepped parapet, topped with a double board door under a stepped, segmental brick arch. To the left of the porch is a projecting stair tower that rises through the roof. This tower has three slit windows to its lower portion, and a full-height mullion-and-transom window within a triple-recessed, segmental-brick-arched surround with a stepped cill. The upper portion of the tower has chamfered corners and soldier brick coping, topped by an offset stage and an offset stack on the front roof pitch to the left. There are only two short dormers on the upper attic level. The roof is hipped at the right end.
The right return has five bays. On the ground floor, a central raised panel features a recessed segmental archway containing a window and flanked by two-light casements. Above are small-pane sashes, and there is a large, transomed five-light dormer to the lower attic level, with a smaller dormer above it. The interior has not been inspected. A later 20th-century wing attached to the left side of the building is not included in this listing.
