Description

This is a 16th century timber-framed cottage, later covered with early 19th century and subsequent red brick. Some chalk rubble is visible in the lower wall and wall of the left-hand lean-to. The high-pitched tiled roof has been rebuilt, and end chimneys are present. The west front has two storeys and four windows, with an irregular appearance, and a one-storey pent projection on the right. The east front is partly obscured by a later adjoining house, where the roof has been renewed with modern concrete tiles. Windows are 19th century and modern casements. The interior contains much exposed timber. One fine room features chamfered beam and joists. Evidence of an early smoke bay remains, with a later chimney inserted. An old, square-headed doorway with simple moulding and original iron hinge pins is now blocked behind the adjoining house. An inglenook with a bread oven, part of a salt box, is also present. Carpenters' marks are visible on the stout timbers, which incorporate large braces. Some reused timber is found in the partitions upstairs.
