Description

St Bede's School Annexe is a former school building, later used as a curriculum and assessment unit, constructed around 1905 for the Reigate Education Authority by John Moir Kennard. It is designed in the Vernacular Revival style. The building features a brick plinth, while the rest is pebbledashed, topped with a wooden modillion cornice. The roof is tiled and includes six brick chimneystacks and a square cupola supported by wooden columns, capped with a pyramidal roof.

The building has an irregular plan and is primarily one storey high, except for the northwest entrance porch, which is two storeys tall. The main front faces northeast and has the main entrance located in the northwest corner. There are five windows on the main front: a triple wooden window on the far left, adjacent to a projecting gable with stone coping and ball finials, which contains a larger Venetian window. The central section features another triple window, while to the right is a larger gable with a wooden modillion cornice and another large Venetian window. The two-storey porch has a splayed bay with a flat roof and wooden modillion cornice, a five-light casement window on the first floor, and below it, a small window and a horseshoe-arched doorcase with a stone surround, double doors, and a flat wooden hood with carved brackets and ornamental iron ties linked to the window sill above. The building retains its original rainwater heads with bulbous profiles.

This well-designed elementary school from 1905 remains externally unaltered and, along with the adjoining former secondary school, represents a good and complete example of an Edwardian Board School.
