Description
St James's Well is a well and wellhead built in 1893 by William John Evelyn, which opened in August of that year. It features a brick and stone stepped plinth with Bargate stone piers and Horsham slab roofs. The structure has a square plan with round piers on square pedestals, topped with cable moulding, square abaci, and cushion capitals. The timber roof has a cross section with raking struts and pendant finials at each gable apex, along with a central boss. Each gable is adorned with scalloped bargeboards. In front of the well, there is a stone-side slab and trough that includes a bronze tap and a granite inscription plate. The well is surrounded by a scrolled wrought iron feature with stone stile steps, and iron winding gear is located below the canopy. This well is a notable feature of the common.
