Description
The Platform Signal Box at North Holmwood Station is a railway signal box built around 1876. It features a Type 5 signal box design created by Saxby and Farmer for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, and includes a contemporary Saxby and Farmer Rocker lever frame. The structure has a plinth made of red brick in Flemish bond, supporting a framed construction with two bays on each side. It has four-pane side-sliding sash windows, with the upper lights featuring curved heads, and a deep panelled frieze. Brackets with faceted finials support the boxed eaves and the oversailing, hipped roof, which is covered with Welsh slate and has a central ridge vent. The entrance is located on the north-east side. Inside, the signal box retains its original levers, telegraph block instruments, and brass-cased signal and track circuit repeaters made by the W R Sykes interlocking signal company, with a locking room situated below. This signal box is an early and complete example of the Saxby and Farmer Type 5 design, with the original lever frame still intact.
