Description
850/0/10031 ST PAUL'S ROAD 02-AUG-02 The Old Vicarage
GV II Vicarage, now house. Circa 1857, designed by Benjamin Ferrey with one bay extension in matching style possibly by the same hand in existence by 1870 and later C19 extensions including large bay window to south and bathroom extension to rear. Gothic style. Built of red brick in Flemish bond with grey brick diaper pattern. Renewed tiled roof (original had bands of fishscale tiles and cresting) and four brick chimneystacks.
EXTERIOR: Main front facing west is of two storeys and three bays , the right hand bay an addition pre-1870. Right side projecting gable with arched braced bargeboards to gable and timberframing with herringbone brick infill. Other bays have smaller gables. Grey brick diaper patterning and band of brick quatrefoils between floors. Windows are mullioned and transomed wooden casements with splayed bay to ground floor right and penticed porch with wooden doors. South elevation has central projecting brick chimneystack, three windows to first floor and two to ground floor, including late C19 six-light square bay. Three casement windows to first floor. Ground floor has two windows including later C19 splayed bay with stone roof. South elevation has projecting central chimneystack, North elevation has gable with bargeboards and casement window and one storey attached service building. Rear elevation has late C19 two storeyed gabled bathroom wing and small later C20 flat-roofed extension.
INTERIOR: Staircase with mahogany handrail with moulded balusters, a tiled and cast iron fireplace to the lounge, a late C19 bolection-moulded fireplace and a series of cast iron fireplaces on the first floor.
HISTORY: St Paul's Church was also designed by Benjamin Ferrey. A print of 1857 shows the vicarage withiout the northernmost bay which is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1870.
