Description

The ice house, located in the grounds of Marsden Nurseries approximately 140 metres north-east of Ashtead House, dates from the 18th century and has been restored. It is made of handmade brick and features an egg-shaped vessel that is mostly underground, topped with a domed roof constructed of headers only. Surrounding the structure is a low wall, and there is a doorway in the north-east quadrant flanked by short, low splayed walls, which are slightly damaged. The structure is now exposed but was likely once covered with earth. The interior has been infilled to just below ground level. This ice house was probably built to serve Ashtead House.
