Description
This monument, located in Abinger Rough, is a late 19th-century stone crucifix designed in a Celtic style. The shaft of the crucifix tapers towards the top and features a carving of the crucifix with foiled ends on the arms, along with the initials "S SW" on the shaft. It marks the site where Samuel Wilberforce, the Bishop of Winchester and son of the prominent abolitionist William Wilberforce, tragically died from a fall while riding with Lord Granville, the Foreign Secretary, on July 12, 1873. The monument was erected by the Wilberforce family and is listed for its historical significance.
