Description

Lyefield Farm House is a hall house dating from the early 16th century, with 17th century extensions to the left and 19th century alterations, along with further 20th century extensions to the rear. It is timber framed on a sandstone rubble plinth, with 19th century red and blue brick below, and features good quality fishscale tile hanging above. The roofs are plain tiled and hipped with gablets on the right. The building has a T-shaped plan, consisting of a three-bay hall house to the right, positioned at right angles to the lane, and a 17th century range to the left that oversails the roof.

The house is two storeys high, with the 17th century section having tall proportions. There are multiple stacks located to the right of centre at the junction of the two sections, with additional stacks at the ends. The front facade is regular, featuring two 3-light, 19th century leaded casement windows on the first floor and two windows below; the left window is a 4-light while the right window is under a gauged brick head. The gabled wing has one 3-light leaded window on each floor, with a spike finial above the gable. A large window on the ground floor is set under a cambered head. To the right of centre, there is a part-glazed, ribbed door beneath a flat hood supported by brackets. The left end has a framed pentice with a rubblestone front wall.

At the rear, there is a gabled wing at right angles and an older range to the left. The right-hand return front has three bays with a brick dentil band over the ground floor, featuring irregular fenestration that includes a gabled dormer. Inside, there is a braced crown-post in the older range to the right and close-stud framing in the bay at the junction with the front.
