Description
Joldwynds is a house built between 1930 and 1933 by Oliver Hill for Wilfred Grove, designed in the International Modern style. It is a rebuild of a house originally by Philip Webb. The exterior features whitewashed stucco and flat roofs that are hidden by parapets. The building has two storeys that step down to the right and rear, creating a series of flat roof terraces that lead to a single storey height. The windows are metal casements with thin drip mouldings, which continue as string courses. On the right side, a window on each floor wraps around a curved corner. A large curved staircase window, which rises through one and a half storeys, is the most prominent feature of the entrance front, with doors located to the left. There is also a circular drum section to the roof, positioned left of centre. Inside, the rooms are plain and simple, with a main spiral staircase around a central pillar, and the newel is intact. Joldwynds is recognized as one of Oliver Hill's most notable examples of the International Modern style.
