Description

Nos. 21 and 23 with attached outbuildings are a farmhouse and outbuildings that have been converted into shops and offices. They likely date from the 16th century, with additions from the 17th century and alterations from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with later cladding, including tile-hanging on the first floor, and has red tile roofs. The current layout is L-shaped, with an early 19th-century section facing the street, a timber-framed range extending to the rear, and another range at right angles towards the back of the left side.

The building has two storeys and a facade with two bays for No. 21 and one bay for No. 23. No. 21 has a modern shop on the ground floor, tile-hanging on the first floor with two 12-pane sash windows, and a hipped roof with projecting eaves. No. 23 features a shop on the ground floor, a three-light casement window on the first floor under a gablet, and a steeply-pitched roof.

Inside No. 21, notable features include large ceiling joists on the ground floor of the rear wing, with vacant mortices for additional joists in the mid-rail of the timber frame at the junction. The first floor has jowelled posts and a king-post roof truss with a large cambered tie-beam and curved struts. The main range displays some exposed wall-plates and tie-beams of lighter scantling, and the roof contains some smoke-blackened rafters.
