Description

Tangley Cottage, also known as The Old Bothy, is a house that has been divided, originally built in the 17th century and extended to the left in the 1880s. The building features a timber frame in the center and right sections, with the right side exposed and red brick infill on the first floor, while the lower part is built in brick on a rendered plinth. The left side is constructed of brick with a tile-hung first floor. The roofs are plain tiled and slope down over the center, creating an H-shaped plan with gabled bays projecting at both ends. The ends are two storeys high with attics in the gables on the right side, while the center is one storey.

There is a tall, multiple corbelled stack to the right of center and a square stack to the left. The windows are primarily leaded casements, most of which have diamond panes. The right end features two gables with attic windows, small projecting bay windows supported by braces on both the ground and first floors, and a three-light ground floor window to the right. To the left of center, there is a cambered head ground floor casement and a three-light leaded casement on the first floor of the left wing. A square bay window is located below a penticed roof. There are two doors on the ground floor to the right of center in the gabled projection, and one door to the left.

Inside, substantial ceiling frames are visible on the right half, with chamfered joists, and there is a deep brick fireplace with a wooden lintel.
