Description
Onslow Bridge is a bridge that was opened in 1882, commissioned by William Hillier, the fourth Earl of Onslow. It is constructed of cast iron on brick and stone abutments. The bridge features a flat single-span design with pierced lattice pattern girders underneath. The parapet balustrades are panelled and include pierced quatrefoils and a guilloche band below, with floral bosses at both the top and bottom. The ends of the bridge have panelled newels with curved tapering bases that support end lanterns decorated with ram's heads, topped with globe lanterns. Memorial plaques on the balustrade indicate that the bridge was opened in July 1882 by Florence, Countess of Onslow, and that it was erected by William Hillier, the 4th Earl of Onslow, who was the High Steward of Guildford.
